Laser Fungal Nail Treatment

Toenail fungus is a very common problem affecting 7-18% of the population (some studies show that as high as 75% of people over the age of 75), will have some sort of fungus to the toenails. Treatments include topical creams and lacquers, oral pills, and laser treatment.

The studies have shown the benefits of laser therapy for toenail fungus appears to be stronger than the topical treatments, and safer to the liver compared to the oral medication.

Laser treatment for toenail fungus was approved by FDA in 2010, although the mechanism of action of laser therapy is still not fully understood. Several theories exist as to why the treatments improve the cosmetic appearance of the nail and might even kill the fungus itself. It is proposed that free radicals are released from the laser causing light absorption by the pigment xanthomegnin, found in the fungus Trichophyton rubrum. The most common theory is the photothermal model, in that the heat and light of the laser damages the fungal mechanical structure inhibiting the the growth of the cells, while still protecting the skin around the toe.

The disadvantage of laser toenail treatments is that it is NOT a covered benefit from all insurance companies. OC Advanced Foot Care understands the benefits of laser treatment and offers the patient  affordable and flexible payment options which includes multiple treatment sessions. Although no guarantees are made with laser treatment results, OC Advanced Foot makes every effort for the best result for you.
